Well, there goes my master plan to cut my van insurance in half by identifying as a woman. Thanks to the UK Supreme Court’s latest ruling, the Equality Act 2010 now officially defines “woman” as a biological classification—which means the insurance gods are unlikely to smile upon my new floral driving gloves and gentle parking technique.
Yes, in a move that has simultaneously clarified the law and shattered a thousand budget insurance dreams, the court ruled that trans women are not legally considered women under the act’s definition of “sex.” Cue the chaos.
For Women Scotland brought the case, arguing that allowing trans women into female-only quotas for public boards was bending the biological boundaries of bureaucracy. And the judges agreed, unanimously, confirming that if you're going to tick the "woman" box, you'd better come with the correct chromosomes.
So what does this mean for the rest of us? For those of us who were quietly eyeing the gender reassignment paperwork purely for better van insurance rates (and maybe cheaper car hire), it's a crushing blow. Turns out, you can’t just identify as a woman to skip the "white van man" premiums.
